At the Final Straw Foundation, that inspiration is deeply felt. As a small ocean conservation charity working along the Solent, our mission is rooted in restoration, protection, and education. Sir David’s storytelling has continually reinforced why this work matters, not just on a global scale, but right here on our own shores.

His influence flows through our work across the region: through the chalk streams of the Meon and Lavant, over the pebbled beaches of Portsmouth and Hayling Island, across the sand dunes of the West Wittering’s, and beneath the waves of our busy coastal harbours. Through our restoration programmes, we use citizen science to monitor water quality and support healthier marine ecosystems. Sir David’s message regarding the interconnectedness of life reminds us that our work last year, reintroducing 10,000 European flat oysters, contributes to a much larger impact: a healthier, more biodiverse, and resilient Solent.

Protection from Pollution

In our protection efforts, from tackling plastic pollution to advocating for cleaner coastlines, we’ve seen firsthand the impacts highlighted in his documentaries. Images of plastic-choked seas are no longer distant; they are reflected in what washes up on our doorsteps. The plastic packaging from fallen shipping containers, endless snippets of rope, and the thousands of nurdles we find on our beaches are why we continue to push for change, inspired by his unwavering commitment to exposing these issues.

Education for the Future

Through our free education programmes, we aim to inspire the same sense of wonder and responsibility in the next generation. Sir David has shown that when people truly connect with the natural world, they are moved to protect it. While he brings the distant world into our living rooms, we strive to bring the wonders of the Solent into the hearts of our coastal communities.

A Personal Connection

Since 2018, we’ve marked Sir David’s birthday by running our own Plastic Free Day, encouraging families and businesses to rethink their reliance on single-use plastics.

One of our proudest moments came a few years ago when we received a personal letter from Sir David himself. It was a powerful reminder that even small organizations working at a local level are part of a massive, global movement for change. His acknowledgment continues to motivate our team and volunteers to keep going, especially when the challenges feel overwhelming.
