At the heart of everything we do is a simple belief: every child deserves the chance to connect with nature, experience adventure, and feel a sense of belonging in the natural world around them. That belief is why we continue to run our Beach School programme, launched in 2022, completely free of charge for schools.
For many children, especially those growing up in coastal cities and towns, the beach is surprisingly unfamiliar. Despite living close to the sea, some children have never paddled in the water, searched for crabs beneath rocks, or simply stood still and listened to the rhythm of the waves. Schools regularly tell us that our Beach School sessions become “the best trip of the year,” and when you witness the excitement, awe, and pure joy on children’s faces, it is easy to understand why.
We have watched children paddle in the sea for the very first time, squealing with laughter as waves splash around their ankles. We have heard children plead, “Do we really have to leave?” after a day spent exploring rock pools, building shelters, discovering wildlife, and learning through play. These moments matter deeply because they help shape children’s relationship with the natural world for years to come.
As an ex-primary teacher, I understand firsthand how valuable real-world learning experiences are for enriching the curriculum. Teachers work incredibly hard to bring learning alive, but in the current climate, many schools simply cannot afford educational trips, transport, or specialist outdoor provision. Budgets are stretched, opportunities are limited, and yet the need for meaningful outdoor experiences has never been greater.
That is why we made a promise: we will continue providing Beach School sessions free of charge.
We also provide transport and fully trained staff to support every visit, including qualified Beach School leaders and emergency paediatric first aiders. We understand that taking children beyond the classroom can feel like a huge responsibility for schools, so we aim to make the experience as supportive, safe, and accessible as possible for teachers and pupils alike. Our goal is not simply to provide a memorable day at the beach, but to work in partnership with schools to deliver enriching, curriculum-linked outdoor learning experiences that many children may otherwise never have the opportunity to access.
Beach School offers something increasingly rare in modern childhood: the freedom to explore, investigate, and discover at a child’s pace. The beach itself becomes the classroom; constantly changing, full of curiosity, and rich with opportunities for learning. Children are encouraged to lead their own investigations, ask questions, solve problems, and take managed risks in a safe and supportive environment.
These experiences naturally develop vital life skills. Through Beach School, children practise teamwork as they build dens together or help one another across slippery surfaces. They develop observation skills while identifying shells, seaweed, and coastal wildlife. They learn resilience when the weather changes or when challenges arise. They strengthen communication through questioning, discussion, and shared discoveries. They also begin to understand risk management, learning how to assess environments, make safe decisions, and build confidence outdoors.
Most importantly, they experience joy, awe, and wonder.
These emotions are powerful drivers for learning. When children feel connected to a place, they become more invested in understanding it and protecting it. By spending time immersed in our coastal environments, children begin to develop a respect for nature that cannot be taught fully within four classroom walls. They start to notice litter on beaches. They ask questions about marine wildlife. They become curious about tides, habitats, erosion, and conservation.
This is where true environmental stewardship begins.
If we want future generations to care for our coasts, oceans, and natural spaces, we must first help them build a relationship with them. Children protect what they love, and they love what they know. Beach School creates those early experiences of connection that can inspire lifelong care for the environment.
Our programme is rooted in accessible, inclusive outdoor learning. We believe nature education should not be reserved for those who can afford expensive experiences. Every child deserves the opportunity to feel sand between their toes, discover hidden treasures in rock pools, and experience the calming, restorative power of the sea.
That same philosophy inspired our Beach School Adventure book, which captures some of our favourite beach-based activities for families, educators, and practitioners to enjoy together. The activities are designed to be easy, affordable, and accessible, encouraging more people to explore the coast with confidence and curiosity. Whether it’s creating natural art, identifying marine life, scavenger hunting, or storytelling inspired by the shoreline, the aim remains the same: to help children learn about the beach, love it, and ultimately want to look after it.
Because that is our reason!
Not just the laughter.
Not just the unforgettable school trips.
Not even the excitement of first-time adventures.
Our driving force is something bigger: creating opportunities for children to feel connected to the coast, to experience wonder in the natural world, and to grow into future guardians of these precious environments.

This project has already welcomed more than 3,200 children to the coast. Keeping the programme free for schools relies entirely on our ability to secure funding and community support.
